In connection with the first-named there is also a large Distillery, where a considerable quantity of rum is manu- There is an Ice Factory at Bowrington, a large Rope Factory in Belcher's Bay, v Mills at Bowrington, a Glass Manufactory at Causeway Bay, and a Matchi ry at Kowloon, a Feather Cleaning and Packing Establishment at Kennedy- Soap Factory at Shaukiwan, and two or three Engineering The Green Island Cement Company has works at Deep Water Bay, on the of the island, and at Hunghom, in Kowloon. The Hongkong Cotton Spin- ring, and Dyeing Company, Limited, has a mill of 55,000 spindles at Soo-Kunpo, menced running with 12,000 spindles in June, 1899. A Paper Mill on a le scale, fitted with the best English machinery, was erected at Aberdeen The Flour Mills at Junk Bay, capable of turning out 8,000 sacks of flour commenced operation on January 1st, 1907, but disaster overtook the concern d the mills are at present closed. A Brewery, designated the Oriental vas opened at Laichikok in 1909. It is equipped with the most modern plant apacity of about 100,000 barrels of beer per annum. An ice-plant is worked ion with the Brewery. Among other industrial enterprises in the Colony are ory, boot factory and a cigar factory.

The city is illu- artly by gas and partly by electric light, the latter having been introduced l of 1890. Among the industries pursued by the Chinese are glass blowing, iling, soap making, vermilion and soy manufacture, tanning, dyeing, toothpowder, and boat building, &c., &c.
is excellent Dock accommodation in the Colony. The Hongkong and Whampoa ipany, Limited, have three extensive establishments, one at Hungham, one at Tai Kok Tsui, and the third at Aberdeen on the south side of Island. The establishments of this Company are fitted with all the latest appliances for engineering and carpenter's work, and the largest H.M.'s Navy has been received into the No. 1 Dock at Hungham. and slips are of the following dimensions :-Hunghom :--No. 1 (Admiralty) feet in length, 86 feet in breadth at entrance at top and 70 feet at id 30 feet depth of water over sill at ordinary spring tiles. No. 2 dock on keel blocks, 371 feet; breadth atentrance, 74 feet; depth of water over sill at pring tides, 18 feet 6 inches. No. 3 dock-Length on keel blocks, 264 feet; entrance, 49 feet 3 ins. ; depth of water over sill at ordinary spring tides, 14 feet. os: No. 1-Length on keel blocks, 240 feet; breadth at entrance,60 feet; depth cks, 14 feet. No. 2-Length on keel blocks, 230 feet; breadth at entrance, pth of water on the blocks at ordinary spring tides, 12 feet. Tai Kok Tsui : tan dock-Length on keel blocks, 466 feet; breadth at entrance, 85 feet depth of water over sill at ordinary spring tides, 20 feet. Aberdeen: Hope gth on keel blocks, 430 feet; breadth at entrance, 84 feet; depth of water over nary spring tides, 23 feet. Lamont dock-Length on keel blocks, 333 feet; t entrance, 64 feet; depth of water over sill at ordinary spring tides, 16 feet, ham and Cosmopolitan Docks are in close proximity to the shipping in port ell sheltered on all sides. The approaches to the Docks are perfectly safe and iate vicinity affords capital anchorage. The Docks are substantially built t with granite. Powerful lifting shears with steam purchase at Hunghom and tan Docks stand on a solid granite sea wall alongside which vessels can lie n or out boilers, guns and other heavy weights. The shears at Hunghom are lifting 70 tons and the depth of water alongside is 24 feet at low tides. There stablishments at which shipbuilding and foundry work is carried on, and l-sized steamers have been launched in the Colony. In 1908 the › constructed by Messrs.
