and a depth of water at ordinary spring tides of 34ft. Gin. As a shipbuilding centre the place is rapidly developing, and since 1889 several large ocean-going vessels have been launched there. Four large vessels built at the yard were completed for sea in 1909, their aggregate tonnage being 29,596. The waterworks, owing to the growth of the town, were found to be insuflicient for its wants and a large extension of the works was completed in March, 1904. The reservoirs hold 405,240,000 gallons, and there are three filter beds and a service reservoir. The railway develop- ments of recent years have made it possible, with a brief sea passage of ten minutes, between Moji and Shimonoseki, to travel by rail from Nagasaki to Kobe and thence to Tokyo. The climate in Nagasaki is mild and salubrious, and there are several very popular health resorts in the neighbourhood, the most famous being Mount Unzen.

In 1909 the imports were valued at Yen 9,312,685, a decrease of Yen 5,320,893 as compared with the figures for 1908, while exports decreased by Yen 135,745, the value being Yen 3,581,684.

Though the foreign trade has fallen off considerably, the population of the port has increased greatly. In December, 1909, it was returned as 176,970, nearly double what it was fifteen years ago. The foreign population, exclusive of Chinese, was 391. The Chinese number about 825. An English newspaper, the Nagasaki Press, is published daily.
