The capital of the state is Pekan,, a town situated a few miles from the mouth of the river Pahang, where is also the seat of Government. The state is under British protection, and in August, 1888, the Sultan, acting under the advice of the Sultan of Johore, applied for a British Resident to assist in the administration of the country, which request was acceded to in October of that year. The revenue in 1892 amounted to $49,480 and the ordinary expenditure to $266,780, in addition to which there was an expenditure of $73,600 incurred in the suppression of the Semantan outbreak. There is a state debt of $785,340 bearing interest at 5 per cent. The imports amounted to $341,673 and the exports to $331,196. The export of gold for the year was $3,500 oz. and of ́tin
