HYDERABAD, HYDERABAD Province, India. HONGKONG P.0.V. Camp.
Indian (Captain) ANSARI, aged 26,
Reason for Punishment.
ANSARI became a P,0.7. in December 1941 when HONGKONG fell to the Japanese Army, and was thereafter interned in HONGKONG P.0.W. Camp, where the found the life of a P.0.W. very monotonous, Becoming tired of this life, and being dissatisfied with the way P.0, as were treated by the Japanese Army, he determined to run away and join the British organization in the interior of China. About December 1942 he conveyed his intention to escape to this organization through the intermediation of a member of the British organization in WAICHOW.
On several occasions he attempted to escape and there was no alter- native but to take steps to prevent this. He was temporarily lodged in a cell at STANLEY GAOL, and subsequently confined to his own quarters. But this restriction was shortly lifted, immediately after he haðúndertaken not to attempt to escape, and he was returned to the P.0.W. Camp. Subsequently he again tried to re-establish his connection with the member of the British organization mentioned above, and to send messages to him (as investigations carried out by the gendarmerie revealed), his object being to plan another escape. He admitted the fact that he had communicated by secret means with an enemy organisation during war time from territory occupied by a belligerent nation. This offence was notified to the court martial. The public prosecutor conducted an examination and found the case as presented in the notification sent by the gendarmerie to be a valid one. It was found that the accused was obstructing the Japanese forces in their task of maintaining the public pesce, and the Governor-General was notified to that effect. The Governor-General ordered the case to be tried by court-martial, which found that the accused had committed acts constituting a crime under Clase 2 paragraph 3 of HONGKONG Occupied Territory Governor-General's Department Military Law, and sentence of death was pronounced.

It is regretted that as the execution took place in war time, it was impossible to take all steps which might have been desired. However, the body was decently interred and the grave marked. It was intended that a burial service should be held when peace was restored. Now that hostilities have ceased, the gravé has been tidied and a gravestone has been erected.
