groups operating in the New Territories, Kowloon and Hongkong, they were; firstly, the Kuomintang party mentioned above, with their leader Sum Chit SING, and their avowed object was to interfere with the Japanese and to execute collaborators, There is little doubt that they hoped to take control, at les t, temporarily, of the area, after the Japanese had been overthrown and in fact the third day after the British Administration started operating the Chief Police officer in Kowloon was approached by their leader with an offer to patrol the streets with machine guns, tœry

eto. He declined with thamica, They were awarded a special gratuity of £5,000,000,00 and guaranteed to disband and turn in all their 62738. There is, however, considerable doubt as to whether this has been done to date. The situation at present is that a Proclamation prohibiting possession of arms by all unauthorized persons has been issued and it is proposed to carry out a series of raids on suspected premises.

Secondly, there is the Kwantung Peoples Anti-Japanese Force. They have been very

active imposing heavy fines, presumably to the profit of their own exchequer, on people who collaborated with the Japanese, There was very considerable abuse in practice and they really became a band who sold *protection'. H-wever, just as the Police were getting in contact with their leader to disband this group a Liaison Officer from The East River column of the Keentung Peoples Anti-Japanese Force arrived with instructions that the whole party ware to move out of the New Territories back into China, Here again, the Folice do not consider that this order has been complied with, as all members of the band are cœsfortably installed in such Hotels the Sun Sun Hotel in Nathan Road, the Nathan Hotel, etc. Vigorous action is being taken to put an end to their activities in the near future and will be reported in the next Intelligence Summary. The situation at present, therefore, is that a large number of armed irregular forces, maabering thousands, are active in the area.

Currency. In the Kowloon area there is still a shortage of Hongkong Dollars, prices in this currency are for the most part quite fantastic and a considerable amount of business is still being done in Japanese Military Yen.

Vedical. Great concar is felt by the senior officers concerning the spread of Venereal Disease mongst the forces, An enormous amount of uncontrolled prostitution is going on in Kowloon, Prices are in comparison with all other things fantastically low ranging from 3.00 to 5.
