In view of the usually disparaging tone of the Chinese press with regard to the British administration of Hong Kong, upon which I had occasion to comment in my despatch No.972 of 10th September last, it is gratifying and encouraging to come across the pleasant picture of present conditions in the Colony painted in the enclosed item translated from the local vernacular, Ta Kung Pao, of October 27th.

2. Generous praise of the successful measures adopted by the Government of Hong Kong for the restoration of normal life and of their handling of the problem of currency has been openly voiced not only to members of my staff, but also to my Belgian Colleague, by Major-General S.K. Yee, of the Chinese Ministry of War Operations, on his return from Hong Kong in connection with the Japanese surrender. As I know that he has also seen the Generalissimo, the Minister of War and General Wu Te-chen, amongst others, it is possible that he has spoken in a similar strain to them.
