While in Shanghai it was brought to my notice that a good deal of ill feeling exists against the Hong Kong Government in regard to Hong Kong notes of high denomination issued under duress during the occupation. It is alleged in the Chinese press that the government have refudiated these notes, a large quantity of which are said to have been sold in Shanghai for value by Japanese.
It may be of course that an agitation is being worked up by speculative holders who hope to reap a large reward for cheap purchases.
As far as I am aware the only statement issued by the Hong Kong Government is that quoted in the Embassy
1 press bulletin of September 17th, that these notes are being
held in suspense pending investigation.
