to War Offico status that he has been informed by Whyatt of High Commissioner's
offio that 136 tons of frozen meat and some butter and choose have been offered
through cancroial channels for Civil Affairs Hong Kong and could be shipped
in TONGAIRO now loading in Australia. We cannot agree to supply of butter
and chce so as they are not included in Hong Kong Civil Affairs programme for
military period. Programme, howover, docs include 1230 tons canned meat.
Although we are strongly overse
(a) to supply of frozen ment
(b) to giving any encouragement to those comercial offers, and
(c) to acting without submitting matter to LF.C., we recognise
undesirability of missing the shipping opportunity prosented
Accordingly if Australian Goverment is
prepared to make available this sall quantity of frozen meat
It must be understood, however,
by the TONGAIRO.
wo would be prepared to agruo.
(a) that it is bought not
through commercial channels
but through Ministry account, and
(b) that supply of canned meat to Hong Kong will
bc correspondingly reduced.
Please discuss with Whyatt and take appropriate action if you and ho
consider it advisable.
