7. There can be no question of establishing a British Yangtse patrol under these circumstances and I have requested C.T.F. 112 to stop the movement North of remainder T.G. 5 T.F. 112.

In any case river is not open and is not likely to be for some time little progress having been mad with M/S abovo Woosung.

8. Regarding the immediate future although conditions here are difficult I think we should stay as long as possible as the presence of H. M.

ships is of great value to Consul General and to the large and important British community who are endeavouring to re-establish their business interests. More ovor once we leave we should have great difficulty in getting back. I trust that present unsatisfactory situation will soon be remedied by diplomatic action.
