I am directed by Mr. Secretary Eden to refer to Berne telegram No. 1956 of the 3rd June a copy of which was sent to you on the 6th June, on the subject of the liquidation of British property in occupied China by the Japanese. A further copy of this telegram is enclosed for convenience of reference.

It would seen to Mr. Eden desirable that the Swiss authorities should be asked to inform the Japanese in some detail of our practice in regard to the custody of enemy property and to request that reciprocal treatment should be accorded to British property in territory in Japanese occupation or under Japanese effective control. Mr. Eden would be grateful for advice as to the terms of any such message to the Swiss authorities.
