partner in the Kailan Mining Administration. Suffice it to

say that several millions sterling have been paid in British

taxation, large sums have been distributed us dividends and

interest, whilst a continuous stream of orders for plant,

machinery and stores of every kind has been derived from ta,

the largest industrial enterprise in North China. Tie plant

and stores actually shipped by the Company from the United

Kingdon during the roar to 30th June 1940 amounted to about

2350,000.

In this Company is in a position after the withdrewel of

the Japanese to resume the joint control and ownership of its

properties there is no reason to doubt that corresponding

advantages to those which have been derived in the past will

continue to accrue to this country, and the Board understand

from the pronouncerionts of Kinisters that finance, foreign trade

end foreign currency will be more than ever necessary in order

to meet the needs of the post-war situation.

It is for these reasons that the Board consider that

the British Staff in China would be doing the best service to their own country by continuing at their posts, and the Board would respectfully submit that the instructions sent through His Lajesty's Minister at Berno be supplemented by a further communication which would permit of their doing so.
