FOREIGN OFFICE, 5.5.1.
6th December, 1940.
Dear Gent,
In connexion with the new immigration bill which has been under consideration in Hong Kong, I should mention that at a recent interview with Mr. Eutler the Chinese Ambasador Kentioned as one of the reasons against the bill the importance which the Chinese Coverment attached to the training of young Chinose at Hong Kong University and asked that we should express to you the hope that you could continue to maintain an interest in the growth of the University.
I believe that the Sritish Council have in recent years taken a good deal of interest in the University though in present circumstancen it is difficult to offer much help. In any case I presume that the recent proposals for the restriction of immigration will in no way interfere with bona fides students from China couing to Yong mong to attend the University.
Yours sincerely,
(sd.)
ASHLEY CLARKE.
