LIMITED DISTRIBUTION.

Cypher telegram to Mr. Broadmead (Chungking)

Foreign Office. 13th July 1940.

11.05 p.m.

No. 37.

IMPORTANT.

My telegram No. 38 [i.e. telegram which repeats the telegram to Washington]

If Chinese Government should raise this subject you should say that our desire for greatest possible measure of stability in the value of China's currency remains, and that we regret that it became essential for us on general grounds to adopt the new arrangements under which sterling will no longer be directly convertible into United States dollars on the free market. It is of course for the Chinese Government to consider whether to approach the United States Government for a currency credit, but for our part we should be glad if it were possible for this to be arranged. Technical details have already been explained by Mr. Rogers to the Bank of China.

Repeated to Shanghai No. 704.
