From the Mercantile
My Lord,
With reference to Foreign Office despatch
No.77 (F 3178/6/10) of the 21st June, 1935, I
have the honour to transmit to Your Lordship,
herewith, a copy of a letter from the Mercantile
Bank of India, Ltd. Bank of India, Limited, regarding the bank notes
12/4/40
in circulation on the 31st March, 1940.
2. On that date I held a deposit receipt
in the joint names of His Britannic Majesty's
Consul-General at Shanghai and the Mercantile
Bank of India for the sum of $12,000 deposited
at call with the Central Bank of China. I
similarly held on the 31st March, 1940, a
deposit receipt for the sum of $300,000, deposited
at call with the Central Bank of China, in
the joint names of the Chartered Bank of India,
Australia and China and His Britannic Majesty's
Consul-General, Shanghai, as security for the
note issue of that Bank.
