Colonial Oofrios,
Downing Street,
:
5 ApMl, 1940.
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of
your Confidential despatch of the 18th January regarding
the question of releasing the Chinese troops at present
interned in the Colony and to refer also to the telegram
on the subject addressed to the Foreign Office by His
Majesty'a Ambassador at Tokyo on the 9th March (repeated
to you as toleɛran No. 58).
Having regard to the present delicate state of
Anglo-Japanese relations, His dajesty's Government, while
fully appreciating the difficulties caused to the Govern-
ment of Hong Kong by the presence of these prisoners in
the Colony, consider that it would be inopportune to
release then now and that consideration of the question
should be deferred for the moment.
GOVERNOR
SIR GEOPPRY NORTHCOTE, X.G.!!.0.

etc.
:
I have the honour
ber

Your most obedient,
humble servant,
