Mr. Li stated that letters to the following

effect, written in Chinese, badly and un-grammatically

worded and almost certainly attributable to Japanese

authorship, had been received not only by the

managers of the Commercial Bank of China and the

National Commercial Bank, but also by the manager

of the Shanghai Commercial and Savings Bank, a

very much larger and more important bank the capital

of which is one hundred million dollars ($100,000,000):-

"The time has come when you must co-operate with us. The Chinese commercial banks must come into the front line and co-operate. You are given five days notice. Take warning. Aɛ an example.you have what has happened to the Ningpo Commercial Bank",

These letters were unsigned and similar in every case

Mr. Li stated that each of the three managers

had come to see him separately for advice but that he had got them together and emphasized the seriousness

of the threat from the economic point of view and the

necessity for keeping the matter secret.

Mr. Li named the same ransom money as having

been paid by Mr. Wu for his release as that given

in the reports from Mr. Rogers, but he added that he had heard that Mr. Wu denied having paid such

a high figure.
