withdrawal of gunboats].
For the reasons stated in my telegram No. 570 35I
to Washington: to Paris:

ships concerned in present circumstances, His Majesty's Government have decided to withdraw at an early date the remaining three gun- boats in Japanese controlled waters on the Yangtze, namely those at Hankow and Nanking, and the guard ship on the Yangtze delta. Further withdrawals from Shanghai will probably be made later as convenient and prior intimation will be sent to the United States

Government. But it is our intention to retain at least one gun- Government.
boat at Shanghai and one at Canton as long as possible, and the three gunboats in Chinese controlled waters will remain for the
present.
