List

My Lord,

BRITISH EMBASSY,

SHANGHAI,

6th November 1939.

13078

DEO

With reference to my despatch Noi 238 of

the 16th March last I have the honour to transmit to

Your Lordship herewith a revised list, prepared by the

Commercial Secretary at Hongkong, of Chinese Government

offices and semi-official offices in the Colony.

2.

Mr. Hutchison considers that this list is

probably complete. He points out, however, that it

does not include concerns such as the Commercial Press,

Chung Hwa Book Company and the China Products Trading Corporation, which, although largely owned and controlled

by Chinese Government officials, can scarcely be

regarded as Government organs. He adds that while part

The Right Honourable

of the staffs of the Central Trust, the Postal

Remittances and Savings Bank and the South West

Transportation Company have been moved to Kunming and

Chungking none of the Hongkong offices of these concerns

have yet, so far as he knows, been closed.

Viscount Halifax, K.G., G.C.S.I.,

etc., etc., etc.,

FOREIGN OFFICE.

I have the honour to be,

With the highest respect,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble Servant,

(in the absence of H.M. Ambassador)

Fle. Broadmead
