I understand from the Chinese Ambassador

that he has invited Lord Chatfield to be the

guest of honour at the annual banquet of the

China Society on May 3rd.

The China Society is a cultural and non-

political body which exists mainly in the

interests of people interested in Chinese art.

Up till now it has been a rather moribund body,

but the Ambassador is trying to revive it into

something more or less analogous to the Japan

Society. In view of the fact that Mr. Leslie

Burgin was the guest of honour at the Japan

Society's annual dinner recently, I see no

reason why Lord Chatfield should not accept the

invitation and make a speech. The Far Eastern
