Yangtse situation report number 6.
Below Barrier. Trade slightly improving on northern
Bank. More Japanese naval vessels patrolling but this is
probably due to increased guerilla activities.
Nanking. Guerilla activities increasing all round.
Intended daily train service to Peiping postponed as line
cut in five places. Hogee started packing eggs again
recently but has had to stop on account of lack of supplies
and high prices.
Kiukiang. Kuling occupied on 19th April. 10000
Japanese troops employed.
Very little or no resistance
from Chinese who withdrew to the south and south east.
Foreigners and property believed all safe. Fewer troop
movements evident but large quantity of mustard gas being
landed.
Hankow. Estimated that two fresh divisions have arrived
during the last fortnight and proceeded north by rail.
Regiment of cavalry landing at Yanglo. Japanese trade as
much as possible but there is no money and little to export.
Foreign communities are leading a very comfortable
though quiet life.
