Little change. Chinese population

continues to increaso. Anti-British propaganda continues

in local press but effect appears negligiblo.

Japanese

tinned foods and luxuries are arriving and can be

purchased by foreigners. German firms reported to bo

shipping up machinery for sale to military.

General. Considerable movements of fresh troops

up river. H.M.S. SCORPION, H.M.S. PETEREL and

H.M.S. COCKCHAFER leave for Hankow shortly and H.M.S.SCORPION,

H.M.S. CRICKET and H.M.S. LADYBIRD down river later.

I anticipate Japanese will try to clear up area between

Taihu and Hankow next month.
