which is a startling indictment of Japanese methode

in Manchuria. Indeed, to those unfamiliar with the

Mukden Incident, his narrative might well appear in-

credible. While serving at Hukden from 1984 to 1938,

however, I acquired personal knowledge of many of the

evente and conditions which he has described, and I

think that the record must be accepted as substantially

authentic, though Mr. Vespa may have sometimes heightened

his colours, The intense resentment which its publicam

tion has occasioned in Japan is readily understandable

by anyone reading this book.

to return to the Far East and aot as correspondent

for a London or New York newspaper in those parts of

China which remain under the control of General Chiang

Kai-chek, or where Soviet influence is increasing.
