Dear George,
Your letter Embassy Series S/O 25 (35/52K/1939) of
the 19th June.
The ramifications and activities of Chinese Government
trading concerns in this colony is one of the various subjects
on which I should long ago have submitted an official despatch
had I had the opportunity of making the necessary investiga-
tions, and I very much regret that no such opportunity has
occurred, or seems likely to occur.
Meanwhile, I have of course had the question in mind
and I have discussed it when occasion served with people like
Witham and the tea exporters, Grimshaw of the Pekin Syndicate
who is concerned with wolfram, Zindel of the Arnhold Trading
Company, who still try to maintain an interest in wood oil
and other produce, Thomson of Carr, Ramsay & Company (Swatow)
would-be exporters of feathers, and various Chinese in the
Central Trust, the Purchasing Commission, and others including
Rogers, and I attach in memorandum form (in case it should be
of use for incorporation in a report) observations based on
the extract from Marker's letter which you enclosed and with
which I generally concur.
A.H.George Esquire, C.M.G.,
British Embassy,
SHANGHAI.
Yours sincerely,
(SIGNED) J.C. HUTCHISON.
