The difficulty in obtaining silk cocoons in Shanghai has
led to a partial outward movement of the operators of filatures.
There are said to be many small scale reeling plants in Wusih, and
some in Hangchow and Kashing. One Shanghai enterprise unable to get
its cocoons into Shanghai has sent a boiler and part of its plant to
a nearby provincial city. Fuel, now almost prohibitive in cost in
Shanghai, is cheaper in provincial cities as is also the cost of
living.
150 plants not previously listed were visited during the
month. Of these, however, only 27 employed more than 50 and only 12
more than 100 workers. The majority were in the machinery and metal
products group. New activity continues to be greatest in the Western
Extra Settlement area, with the Eastern district third.
