SHIPPING.
The market is very quiet. No business reported in the usual general char teri ng trades, i.e., Bangkokg and Saigon; the closing or Swa tow, etc., has seri qualy affected the rice trade from the se ports. Little activity in the coal trade; fixtures reported are Hongay/Hong Kong; Port Courbet/Shanghai; Hon gay/Manila.
As regards the China coast trades, the position is very depress – ing. Market from North China ports and Shanghai to the South is very bad. The demand from Hong Kong is poor. Foochow and Swatow remain closed and prospects of an early resumption of trading are far from bright. Satisfactory support continues from Pakhoi but prospects from Hoihow are uncertain. Canton remains closed to foreign trade; the Japanese maintain a strict control on imports to end exports from Canton.
