SUGAR.

The early part of the past month saw a continuance of the advance in London Terminal quotations, but a setback occurred when rumours began to circulate that the International Sugar Council were considering sanctioning the release of further supplies of raw sugar in order to alleviate the shortage.

It was announced later that the Council had authorised the release of a further 240,000 tons for the remainder of the current Convention Year, of which 63,000 tons had been allotted to Java. The immediate reaction of this was a halt in the recent large scale buying movement. Since then, London Terminal quotations have fluctuated slightly, but markets generally have been very quiet pending the finding of a new price level.

It is fumoured that NIVAS will probably try to dispose of their additional quota West of Suez, in which case, Eastern market prices should eventually benefit.

India is an uncertain

quantity as, with the possibility of over- buying having taken place, some dealers may be attempting to sell ba ok to Java.

In the circumstances, the local market was weak, but local dealers came in at the end of ay for supplies of Refineds in order to replenish depleted stocks.

China and Southern markets were quiet, but heavy shipments booked in previous months were despatched.
