REPORT ON SHIPPING AND INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY, 16th JUNE, 1939.
SHIPPING.
The market remains quiet. Fixtures reported were: a steamer for 12 months' time oh arter, Bangkok trade; steamer to load 6,000 tons coal, Calcutta/Hong Kong.
No improvement to report in China coast trades. The demand from Tientsin is fair; however it is not yet know how the political situation now developing at Tientsin will affect future support. Moderate cargoes from Chefoo, Weihaiwel, Tsingtau and Shanghai. Nothing doing from Foochow, which port is more or less closed by the Japanese. The recent collapse in National exchange has upset the Hong Kong market, with the result steamers are receiving poor cargoes; the demand is expected to improve as soon as exchange is stablised. Support from Swatow is fair. Good cargoes from Pakhoi. The port of Holhow remains closed to foreign shipping.
No change at Canton. British and other foreign ateamers are prohibited from trading, though Japanese tonmge operates freely.
