Following is reply to request by me to the Acting Consul General at Canton for gist of statement by Japanese official

Begins. Following is the spokesman at Canton of 20th. August.

Japanese had found in Shanshun

substance of the Statement :

? several wireless stations for the communication of information

between Hong Kong and the interior via Shanshun by telephone, They had also found new motor roads constructed along the railway . They regret that military necessity therefore compele them to out

Ends. all communication between Hong Kong and the interior.

This statement is groundless pretext for stopping Hong Kong's fresh provisions supplies

No new motor road has been construot-

ed along the border on the British side during the last 18 months. Since the occupation of Canton this Government has made every endeavour to prevent munitions of war being sent from the Colony into China except by shipment to treaty ports,
