Situation report August 18th.

Staff officer visited Shumchun this morning to establish

contact with local Japanese commander Major Genl. Arimura. Colonel

Sato staff officer General Ando also present. Japanese attitude

polite and they expressed satisfaction at operations being carried

out without incident. Japanese have taken every precaution to

respect British territory. They occupied Sha Tau Kosob last evening.

Japanese posts established in contact with (?our) troops on main

communications. No incidents today. British staff officer

informed that Japanese operations have no hostile intention towards

us at present and local (?commander) intention is to avoid friction

unless orders to contrary received from Tokyo. Probable Japanese

occupation of frontier area will be prolonged and that we shall be

required to occupy military posts on frontier for some time.
