The only answers which touch on smuggling

in North China are F 12169/453/10/1938 and

F 1754/1754/10. We never undertook to make

any "enquiries."

The latest report (F 3058/1754/10)

indicates that smuggling in the Tientsin area

has been reduced to negligible proportions.

F 1982 reports a considerable amount of

smuggling of Japanese goods into Shanghai,

but that is not North China.

4. Mr. Day asked the Prime Minister whether he can give any further informa- tion as to the result of the inquiries made relative to the smuggling in Northern China; and whether the situation has appreciably altered since his last state- ment on this subject?

Mr. Butler: The most recent reports re- ceived by my Noble Friend indicate that smuggling in this area has been reduced to negligible proportions.

Mr. Day: Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether any reply has been received from the Japanese Government to the last representation made on this subject?

Mr. Butler: We have collected what information we have from several sources.
