of students are expected to be on part-time day release.

Special levies on the building and garment trades, also

introduced this year, are financing special training

facilities for persons entering these trades.

Tertiary and further education

9. a) In the course of the present quadrennium ending

1978, enrolment in the two Universities will have

increased from 6352 to 8860 (all are heavily sub-

sidised, and provision for loans or free places is

made to ensure that none are denied through lack of

means). In the following quadrennium continuing

expansion is envisaged, though the exact targets

will depend on the advice of the University and

Polytechnic Grants Committee yet to be received;

in the course of it a second medical school will be

opened in the Chinese University and a dental

school in the Hong Kong University, and planning

for both is starting this year.

b) The Hong Kong Polytechnic (a new institution)

will have increased from 1834 equivalent full-time

students in September 1972, largely taken over from

the Technical College which formed its nucleus, to

9,800 by '77/78: and it is expected to build up

to 12,400 by '79/80.
