TOP SECRET

COLONIAL SECRETARY

May I refer to your minute of 23rd May about the

proposal to station two extra units in Hong Kong in

addition to the long-term garrison of six units already

agreed.

The settlement now proposed, as described in

paragraph 2 of your minute, is acceptable to me, and I

shall be ready to report in that sense to the Defence

Committee in due course. Meanwhile I should have no

objection to the arrangements for the move of the

additional units being put in hand at once.

Like the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for

War, I must of course reserve my position on the question

of compensation for Service Department lands in

Hong Kong.

I am sending copies of this minute to the

Minister of Defence and the Secretary of State for War.

6th June, 1958
