Comfort Mission may, however, attempt to gain entry next week-end when arrangements are being made to distribute further relief funds amounting to about (H.K.)100,000 from Canton to victims of the Tung Tau fire.
9. Apparent balance of departures over permitted entries 5,214. Chinese frontier controls have been still further tightened, probably to prevent escape of those involved in the very extensive anti-corruption campaign now in full progress in Kwangtung. No significant change in general border situation apart from a slightly more truculent attitude on the part of the Communist frontier guards.

10. Enquiry has been received from Japan as to whether permission would be given for tugs and small coasters to value of £2,000,000 to be built in Hong Kong for export to Russia via Japan. Japan would receive pulp wood from Russia in exchange. Matter is under consideration.
