Hong Kong telegram No. 33 to Colonial Office.

Expulsion of Chinese Film Technicians.

Peoples' Daily of 16th January carried on back page report of meeting of Cultural Circles in Canton on 13th January to protest against expulsion of eight (repeat eight) technicians. The only reason given for expulsion was an attempt to suppress patriotism of overseas Chinese.

2. Similarly the item appeared in Peking English language daily news release on 17th January describing the arrests, and accusing the police of brutality and alleging that there was no reason for arrests except a plot of British imperialists in connivance with the Americans and Chiang Kai-shek's agents, to persecute Chinese inhabitants in Hong Kong.

3. Peoples' Daily of 17th January carries on front page a more violent protest from the variis Government film bureaus and studios stating that this action merely reveals old British policy of blocking Chinese patriotic movements.

4. Peoples' Daily of 17th January also featured on the front page an account of a meeting of all bodies and democratic parties in Kwangtung to protest against Hong Kong Government's oppression of Chinese by expelling sufferers from recent firings in Kowloon after failing to give them relief. Report headlines statement that the meeting passed resolution "warning" the Hong Kong Government that they must accept the responsibility for the consequences if they continue to oppress "our brethren victims of firing".
