Eight Chinese cinema workers
+
re unjustly arrested and deported by the British Government
Hong Kong on January 10. They were Ssuma Wen-sen,
Liu Chiung, Shen Chi and Ti Fan,
Ma Kuo-liang, Chi Wen-Shao, Shu Shih and Yang Hua.
Between 4 and 11 a.m. on January 10, a large number of police and plain-clothes men were dispatched in armoured cars with tommy guns and other small arms by the Hong Kong colonial government, and surrounded the residences of the above eight Chinese who were instantly placed under arrest. When questioned about the reason for the arrest, the policemen replied, "No reason whatever. The Hong Kong Government can arrest you whenever it pleases." Forbidden to speak with their families or to take any clothes or other personal belongings with them, the cinema workers were forced at gun point to leave their houses and were thrown into police cars. Meanwhile, their residences were further searched by those men left behind.
On their arrival at the police headquarters, a British assistant attempted to have their fingerprints put on a printed document. Ssuma Wen-sen and others refused. They again asked for the reason for their arrest and for putting their fingerprints on a document. At this, the British assistant rushed over to Ssuma Wen-sen and, grabbing the latter's clothes and brandishing his fist in his ear, shouted, "This is the reason." The other seven Chinese were also maltreated by the Hong Kong Government. All of them were finally deported from Hong Kong.
The deported group arrived in Canton on January 10 and 11 Indignantly accusing the Hong Kong colonial government of criminal acts of persecuting Chinese residents, Ssuma Wen-sen pointed out at a press conference: "Our deportation is a new development in the plot of the British imperialists in connivance with American and Chiang Kai-Shek's agents to persecute Chinese inhabitants in Hong Kong. However, the victorious Chinese people will never tolerate such persecution and the ultimate victory will be theirs."
