Addrossed to Foreign Office telegram No. 99 of 12th February, Repeated for information to Hong Kong and Singapore
My telegram No. 59: Hong Kong deportations.
After the initial outburst of the usual untrue and immoderate propaganda in the press it appeared likely that subject would be dropped. Recently however, it has been given renewed prominence. During the last week the Chinese press and the English language Daily News release have published items in the usual provocative terms as will be indicated by the following typical headings: "Hong Kong Persecution Must Stop", "Support for the Government's Protest on Hong Kong Deportations" "Deported Woman Trade Union Leader Accuses British".
2. It is perhaps worth noting that these latest items most of which will no doubt be published abroad by New China News Agency are quotations from Canton press reports and not original comment by the Peking press. This suggests that the Chinese Government are deliberately adopting this indirect method of keeping agitation alive at least for the present.
