The first six months of 1963 show however that Japan is now buying Hongkong goods. Japan in- creased her purchases in this period, by $18.4 million, $9.7 million worth of fish and fish preparations, $2.5 million worth of jade and $3.6 million worth of mis- cellaneous inanufactured articles. These items have all shown considerable in- creases since 1961.
Hongkong's exports of fish and pre- parations have grown from an insigni- ficant $300,000 to $4.9 million (of which $4.5 million for fresh, chilled or frozen prawns and shrimps) last year. main item in miscellaneous manufactures was artificial plastic flowers.

Shipments this year amounted to about 10,000 tons a month. The prices were better in 1962, when 1.15 million tons of ores were exported compared to 1.27 million tons in 1961.

The large drop registered in the ex- port of steel scraps in 1962 was due to the development of ship-breaking in Japan. In the first half of 1963, 45,800 tons of steel scraps were exported to Japan, fetching $8.65 million, whereas in the same period of 1962, the export was only 35,160 tons, but fetching $9.2 million.
Some 63% of Hongkong's 1962 ex- port of jade went to Japan.
The value of Hongkong's re-exports to Japan in 1962 was 16% above that of 1961. Fruit and vegetables; jewellery; oilseeds; and miscellaneous animal and vegetable crude materials made up the majority.
In the first half of 1963, Hongkong has done exceptionally well in the entre- pot trade, increasing the value by 50% over the same period last year. Almost all the major items registered increases in value. Re-export of oilseeds etc is mostly absorbed by Japan, taking in $18.2 million out of Hongkong's total of $24.3 million.
Japan's export to Hongkong increased by 37% in 1962. Textiles was by far

the most important item, constituting about 40% of Hongkong's total import of Japanese goods. When it was rc- ported in August that the Cotton Ad- visory Board in Hongkong was consider- ing restraint on the importation of Japanese finished piecegoods, Japanese businessmen in Hongkong were said to have been very concerned.
It turned out that the Board was con- sidering a voluntary incentive scheme whereby those using more locally-manu- factured contents would receive a slight advantage in the allocation of quotas, and is not a specific ban on Japanese textiles. Japan's fabrics of wool and terylene type, containing filament, have been doing well in the Hongkong market in 1963.
to
Japan's exports of base metals Hongkong have been showing remark- able increases, the main item being iron and steel bars which accounted for HK$37.4 million in 1962. As Hong- kong's overall import of this item has not shown increase since 1960, Hong- kong consumers are showing preference for Japanese steel.
