The exact direction and position of the examination line is a matter for consi- deration of the local naval and military authorities. It is suggested that it might proceed from one of the guns of Colaba North Battery to some prominent object on the other side of the harbour entrance in a generally south-easterly direction.

17. The Committee are informed that the question of keeping a sufficient coal supply at Bombay, referred to on page 17, has been settled since the date of submission of the Scheme.

18. The Committee recognize that the control of the civil population at Bombay in war is a matter of paramount importance, and they indorse the views expressed by Brigadier-General Gatacre (page 18) as to the necessity for an increase in the garrison allotted to this port on mobilization.

19. As a minor matter of arrangement the Committee consider that that of the Aden Scheme, in which Tables are inserted in the body of the Scheme under the different headings to which they refer, is more convenient than that of the Bombay Scheme, in which they occur as Appendices at the end. A map, such as the Com- mittee recommended should be bound up with the Aden Scheme, should also be added to that of Bombay.
