Remarks by the Colonial Defence Committee.
Letter of Governor to Chief Secretary.
THE Governor, in his letter to the Chief Secretary, dated the 14th November, 1895, expresses the opinion that the land forces should be gradually brought up, as the finances of the Colony improve, to the strength allowed in 1891, and on p. 7 of the Defence Scheme, revised to November 1895, a sentence has been added to the effect that "the force at present available is not adequate to the necessities of an effective scheme of defence."
