neighbourhood of Mauritius. The forts and garrison are expressly intended to meet the case of any hostile force small enough to slip past our squadron unobserved.
14. The Colonial Defence Committee fully concur in the recommendation that the signal stations should be placed, as formerly, in the hands of British soldiers or sailors, the garrison being correspondingly increased to provide for this extra duty. They also note the reference to the numerical weakness of the present garrison of Mauritius made by the Officer Commanding Troops at p. 14. The Committee have dealt with both these subject in Part II of these Remarks.
