DIRECTIVE TO OOMMANDER-IN-CHIT

EASTERN FLEET.

•HMJ. Ganament.

On assumption of your duties as Commander-in-Chief, Eastern Fleet, you will become jointly responsible with the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, to the quiets op g for the conduct of our strategy in the Far East, and for the boordination of plans with our allies and potential allies in accordance with instructions issued to you from time to time.

You are to communicate direct with the Defence Departments of the Dominions on all routine matters of interest to them, but on matters of major policy you are to communicate with the Dominion Goverments through H.m. Govorruzzent.

In close collaboration with the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, you are to:-

(a) Keep the Governor of the Straits Settlements and

High Commissioner for the Melay States, the Governor of Burma and the Governor of Hong Kong closely and constantly informed and consult them as appropriate.

(b) Maintain touch, where appropriate, with His Majesty's Representatives in Japan, Chine United States of America and Thailand, and with His Majesty's Consuls General in the Netherlands Mast Indies, the Philippine Islands and Indo-China.

You are to communicate as necessary with the Chiefs of Staff through the Admiralty. Communications from the Chiefs of Staff dealing with matters affecting the joint responsibility of Commander-in-Chief, Far East and Commander-in-Chief, Eastern Fleet will be sent through the War Office or the Admiralty as from the Chiefs of Staff.

A copy of the Directive to the Commander-in-Chief, Far East is attached for your information.
