CONSTRUCTION OF AN AERODROME IN THE FAROES,

Memorandum by Vice-Chief of Imperial General Staff.

(Reference: C.O.S,(41)607.)

At their 346th Meeting, the Chiefs of Staff:- "(a) Agreed in principle that an aerodrome should be

(6)

constructed in the Faroes.

Invited the Air Ministry in consultation with the War Office to initiate preparations with a view to work being started in the Spring of 1942."

After consideration the Air Council reached the conclusion that the only feasible method of carrying out the work was by the employment of military labour and plant, and accordingly enquired whether the Army Council would be prepared to undertake the work of construction of the aerodrome, together with the provision of the necessary ancillary services.

3.

A preliminary examination of the project, based on a reconnaissance which is a year old and not fully detailed, suggests that it will take about two years to complete,

In addition it and will cost approximately £350,000. will absorb a large amount of military labour which is urgently required elsewhere.

4.

It is proposed to send a reconnaissance party to SANDO, leaving United Kingdom 26th November, 1941,

As a result of and returning about 17th December, 1941.

this reconnaissance it will be possible to give a detailed report on the time, labour, and plant involved.

5.

It is recommended that the decision to construct an aerodrome in the Faroes should be reconsidered in the light of this report, when it is available.
