APPENDIX E.
Reports from R.A.F. Pilots Operating Over Germany. Dortmund-Ems Canal, September 2nd/3rd, 1940.
During a recent attack on the Dortmund-Ems Canal, our aircraft encountered an artificial white smoke screen.
The height of the attacking aircraft was 3,000-6,000 feet. The night was dark, but fairly clear, no moon or cloud, but some local haze. Visibility was approximately 2-3 miles.
The smoke screen was generated from five points about mile from the target, and joined up to form a solid cloud about 200 yards from the source. The top of the screen was about 500 feet; the smoke was white in colour and very obvious.
One pilot went to examine it.
The screen cbscured most of a portion of the canal
The pilots between two junctions but there were slight gaps. considered that, had they not known the target, accurate bombing would have been impossible, but as they had been there before, they were able to carry out the attack.
Although the exact position of the bursts could not be observed owing to the smoke screen, it is believed that the raid was reasonably successful.
