ANNEX I.
SITUATION AS REGARDS SUPPLIES OF WAR MATERIAL
FOR GREECE.
Memorandum by the War Office.
General.
At the start of the war the Greek Army was equipped with a very large variety of weapons of French, Italian and German make, with limited stocks of ammunition for these weapons and with a very small manufacturing capacity for munitions in the country..
In addition, they had large deficits in general stores, clothing, oil supplies, and, to some extent, food.
:
can
Broadly speaking, it would appear that unless very considerable quantities (followed by steady maintenance) either of ammunition for the weapons they possess or of new weapons with adequate stocks of ammunition, reach Greece, it will be difficult, if not impossible, for the Greek Army to continue fighting for more than another two or three months.
In the following paragraphs, Greek requirements, under five main headings, are dealt with in some detail.
2. General Stores.
Generally speaking, we have been able, under tis heading, to do something towards meeting the immediate requirements of Greece from reserves and stocks, but difficulty will undoubtedly be encountered in meeting the recurring maintenance requirements, owing to our own needs and, to some extent, shipping difficulties.
The following describes the situation in more
detail:-
(a) Clothing.
The bulk of the initial demands have boon or are being, met and the possibility of meeting maintenance demands (which include battle dress for the full strength of the Greek Army) is still under examination, but it should be possible to go a good way towards satisfying them.
Road
(b) Engineer Stores. Requirements of barbed wire, sandbags and demolition stores are being met.. making machinery and other machine tools are, however, not available.
(c) Signal Stores.
Initial demands
Demands for wireless sets
