POLICY IN THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN.
The following Telegram* from the Commander-in- Chief, Mediterranean, is circulated at the request of the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff for consideration by the Chiefs of Staff.
Richmond Terrace, S.W.1.
(Signed) L. C. HOLLIS.
ANNEX.
Message from Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean.
Date 17.6.40. Recd. 0925.
Addressed Admiralty, Repeated G.0.0. in C., Middle East. Repeated A.O.C. in Chief, Middle East.
In view of Turkish attitude at present I do not intend to send on ships now awaiting passage from Egypt with military and road making materials and stores to Dardanelles. It would in any case be inconvenient to provide escorts and pending clarification of situation it appears undesirable to send military materials to Turks unless they are meaning to assist us, in (?full) by exercising contraband control in Straits. Presume Government Policy on this matter will be signalled. G.O.C. in C., Middle East, pass to A.0.C. in Chief, Middle East.
