I AM directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 29th ultimo, and in reply I am to refer you to the letter from the Treasury of the 22nd May, a copy of which was inclosed in the letter from this Office of the 27th ultimo,† consenting to the first cost of the Committee's recommendations for Barbadoes and Jamaica being provided for in the Army and Navy Estimates, and I am to request that you will move the Secretary of State for War to order the guns if they have not already been commenced.
The information which will result from the consideration of this question by the Secretary of State for War and the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty will materially assist Sir Michael Hicks Beach in arriving at a conclusion as to the apportionments of the cost of these works.
