I HAVE the honour to call your Lordship's attention to my Secret despatch of the 3rd February last, and to state that, as the War Office have to select their officer whom it is proposed to send to Vancouver Island, it is very desirable that I should receive a reply as soon as possible, and it would be an additional convenience if the nature of the reply of your Government could be transmitted to me by telegraph.

WITH reference to your letter of the 18th January, relative to the defence of Esquimault and Victoria, I am directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to transmit to you, for the information of Secretary Colonel Stanley, a copy of a telegram from the Marquis of Lorne in reply to Sir Michael Hicks Beach's despatch of the 5th instant, requesting an early reply to his despatch of the 3rd February on the subject, stating that Lieutenant-Colonel Strange, R.A., has been appointed to proceed to Vancouver Island.
