Downing Street, July 31, 1878. WITH reference to your despatch No. 63 of the 20th May last,+ I have the honour to transmit to you a copy of a letter from the Admiralty, stating that it appears to the Lords Commissioners that the necessity of stationing a man-of-war at Nassau no longer exists, and that it may be sufficient that the Bahamas should be visited by Her Majesty's ships in turn, like other places on the West India Station, according as the Commander-in-chief is able to make arrangements.

I AM requested by the Colonial Defence Committee to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 29th July, transmitting a copy of a further despatch§ from the Governor of Hong Kong with reference to the practicability of raising Chinese troops in that Colony.

I am to state, in reply, that the Committee having fully considered this question, and having expressed their views in my letter of the 29th ultimo,|| have no further observations to offer on the subject.
