OFFICERS FOR THE COMMONWEALTH NAVAL FORCES.
IN the provisional arrangement made by the Imperial Conference of August 1909 and unanimously accepted by the Commonwealth Parliament, the following paragraphs
occur :-

great stress was laid upon the maintenance of the same general standard of training, discipline, and general efficiency both in ships and officers "and men."
appears from the Navy List of January 1911 that the number of active service officers of the Commonwealth Naval Forces is-
4 Captains (1 late Director of Naval Forces, 3 late Commandants of State
Divisions),
1 Commandant (late Commandant of State Division),
6 Lieutenants (4 late R.N.R.),
3 Sub-Lieutenants,
3 Engineer Lieutenants and Sub-Lieutenants,
22 Gunners and Boatswains,
3 Carpenters,
3 Artificer Engineers,
2 Medical Officers,
5 Accountant Officers,
and that they are either serving on the Staff, or as Instructors, or in the "Paramatta "
and “Yarra," two of the older class of torpedo-boat destroyers.
The Australian Unit, composed of the following:—
1 "Australia"-armoured cruiser,
3" Bristols,"
6 Destroyers (river class),
3 Submarines,
would require approximately the following officers :--
4 Captains.
2 Commanders.
35 Lieutenants.
10 Sub-Lieutenants.
20 Engineer Officers.
5 Medical Officers.
9 Accountant Officers.
22 Gunners and Boatswains.
Carpenters.
6 Artificer Engineers. 12 Midshipmen, [609]
