and two Indian battalions, is the bare minimum required to defend the land forte- 19 miles long-against raiding attacks by a maximum force of 4,000 men, which is now regarded as reasonably probable. They therefore recommend that advantage should be taken of any favourable opportunity that may be offered by the reduction of the infantry at stations abroad to increase the garrison of Hong Kong by one infantry battalion.
